Nick Calathes no longer has the option of returning to Florida for his junior season.

Nor apparently, the desire.

Calathes has decided to play professional basketball next season with a team in Greece, sources have confirmed, ending speculation over whether the Casselberry native would return to the Gators next season or leave for the NBA.

Calathes, who averaged a team-leading 17.2 points per game, will play for Panathinaikos, based in Greece.

Calathes, 20, is of Greek heritage and is familiar with basketball in that part of the world. Last summer, he failed to make Greece's Olympic team, but spent several weeks playing for the Greek National Team in the FIBA Under-20 championships.

Calathes has not signed a contract, but sources said a deal is imminent. Florida officials said UF coach Billy Donovan would have no comment on Saturday evening.

Panathinaikos has won 29 Greek national championships and five Euroleague titles.

Whether Calathes will be allowed to keep his name in the NBA Draft remains uncertain. Earlier this week, several draft analysts did not have Calathes listed as a first-round pick, including SI.com, which had ten guards listed ahead of Calathes in its mock draft.

Calathes' decision to not return, which was generally expected, means Florida will have just one scholarship point guard on the roster, sophomore Erving Walker.
