Former Freedom High star Calvin Smith named SEC Male Runner of the Year
Calvin Smith, a former state champion at Freedom High and now a standout at Florida,on Monday was named the SEC Outdoor Men's Runner of the Year.
Florida coach Mike Holloway, who led the Florida women's Track and Field team to an SEC Outdoor championship, was named SEC Women's Coach of the Year.
Smith was the 2009 SEC Outdoor Commissioner’s Trophy winner after scoring 22 points at the league meet in Gainesville. He was the SEC Champion in the men’s 400-meter dash, finished second in the 200-meter dash, was part of the Gators’ SEC Champion 4x100-meter relay team and ran a leg of the school’s third-place 4x400-meter relay team. He became Florida’s first SEC Outdoor Commissioner’s Trophy recipient since the 1992 season.
Smith’s time of 44.96 in the 400-meter dash goes down as the third-best time in school history in that event and the school’s 4x100-meter relay team also clocked the third-fastest time (38.74) in school history.
Currently, Smith holds the nation’s fastest 400-meter time and ranks 12th nationally in the 200-meter dash.
