SEC Track and Field Championships begin today in Gainesville

The SEC Track and Field Championships kick off today at 2:30 p.m. at Percy Beard Track, and will run through Sunday.

The Gators are the No. 1 team in the nation in the US Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association poll.

Among those in action will be Calvin Smith, the junior sprinter from Lutz, ranks third in the nation in the men's 400-meter dash (45.32) and also runs the third leg of the No. 3-ranked men's 4x400 meter relay squad.

Demps Florida RB Jeff Demps will also be in action in the 100 meter and 4x100 meter relay.

UF coach Mike Holloway said he's excited about the team, and the Gators' chances for a title this weekend. And about the opportunity it presents for area track and field fans.

"Anybody who wants to see the best in track and field in all aspects should come to the SEC championship meet,'' Holloway said.

More about Jeff Demps and his role with the Gators' football and track teams.
