Calvin Smith, Gators win 4x100 national championship

They entered the NCAA championship on Friday ranked the No. 1 4x100 team in the nation. By day's end, the Florida Gators had added the title of NCAA 4x100 national champions.

The Gators' quartet of Dennis Martin, Lutz native Calvin Smith, Terrell Wilks and Jeremy Hall became the third 4x100-meter relay NCAA Championship team in program history, winning with a time of 38.58. It is the first title in that event since 2004.

“I am absolutely ecstatic about our performance today,” Florida head coach Mike Holloway said.

Smith also finished third in the semifinals of the men’s 400-meter dash in a time of 45.40. Ranked No. 1-ranked in that event, Smith will compete in the event’s finals at 1:12 p.m. on Saturday.
