Florida junior sprinter Calvin Smith (right in photo) on Monday was named the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association South Region Outdoor Men's Runner of the Year.
Gator head coach Mike Holloway (photo, left) was named the South Region Men's Coach of the Year, the first UF coach to earn that honor.
Smith, the former Freedom High track standout currently leads the nation in the 400-meter dash with a time of 44.96, and is part of the nation’s No. 1 4x100-meter relay team (38.74) and the No. 4 4x400-meter relay team (3:02.84).
Smith was the 2009 SEC Outdoor Men’s Runner of the Year after capturing the Commissioner’s Trophy at the SEC Outdoor Championships, scoring a league-best 22 total points. He finished first in the 400m, second in the 200m and was part of a first-place 4x100-meter relay team and a third-place 4x400-meter relay team.
Holloway, who is in his seventh season as head coach of the Florida men’s track and field team and his 14th as part of the UF coaching staff, recently led the Gator men to their first NCAA East Regional title since 2004, following a second-place finish at the SEC Outdoor Championships.
