After humble beginnings, Florida coach Urban Meyer admits he'll take No. 1 any time

Urban Meyer gets asked the question quite often: Do you like being No. 1 or would you rather not have that extra pressure?

After much deliberation, Meyer said he'll take being on top any day. Because, he said, it means he has a program with very good players.

"Someone asked me that question and I heard someone say I hope we're never ranked No. 1,'' Meyer said. "I hope we're ranked No. 1 every year for the next 10. I'll take it right now. That means we're really good and we've got really good players. That's obviously not going to happen because of recruiting and who's going to leave early and all that. We don't really pay much attention to it, but if someone asks
me would you rather be 114 or No. 1, I'll take No. 1 because that means you have really, really  good players.''

To understand where Meyer is coming from, you have to remember where he's been.

In 2001, Meyer took his first head coaching job at Bowling Green. He had to search the preseason magazines to find his team.

"The first year, 2001, I pulled out the magazine and I liked reading those preseason magazines,'' Meyer said. "They go one through 116, I think it was at the time. And I opened the page and I thought we'd be around 90th or something like this and I'm going, No. Get to 100, no. 101. At 114 I flip the page and there's the old Bowling Green Falcons right there - 114th in the country.''

On Tuesday, more than 130 people attended Florida's media day. Back in 2001 at his school's conference media day, nobody wanted to talk to Meyer about Bowling Green.

"I walked into the room and sat down,'' Meyer remembered. "My SID (sports information director) and I sit there for a little while and I get up and go back to my room. Not one interview. Do I miss those days? Sometimes I do. I'm very humbled with where we're at. It makes you think, now. My mind's spinning
getting visualizations what that was like to walk into the Detroit Renaissance center, where media day was that day. That's a whole different world.''
