Tim Tebow still No. 1 on Scripps Howard Heisman Trophy poll, but race tightens
Say what you will about whether or not Florida quarterback is playing as well this season as he did last year, but the senior remains at the top of this week's Scripps Howard Heisman Trophy poll.
Rising star Mark Ingram, the Alabama running back, is No. 2. Ingram had a career-high 246 yards against South Carolina last week, putting him front and center in the Heisman discussion.
Tebow received six first-place votes, 39 poll points. But his margin is just four ahead of Ingram, who had 35 points, including three first-place votes.
That makes the race the closest it has been in the Scripps poll this season.
Of note: Alabama has never had a Heisman Trophy winner. Tebow is trying to become only the second player to win it twice (Ohio State's Archie Griffin is the only two-time winner).
Texas QB Colt McCoy fell from second to fifth. Notre Dame QB Jimmy Clausen remained in third place, and Houston QB Case Keenum is in fourth.
The Scripps poll, compiled by the Rocky Mountain News in Denver, is the longest running weekly Heisman watch. It has picked 17 of the previous 21 winners correctly.
