Girlfriend of Wondy Pierre-Louis disputes charges in court; bond set at $40,000
The girlfriend of former UF cornerback Wondy Pierre-Louis appeared in an Alachua County courtroom Tuesday morning and asked a judge that he be released, saying she does not feel threatened by him and that police accounts surrounding the incident in which he is facing five charges, including domestic battery, are inaccurate.
Alachua County Judge Walter Green listened to Starlett Lazenberry tell a much different story than police reports, then reduced Pierre-Louis' bond from $185,000 to $40,000. He has no prior criminal history.
Lazenberry said Pierre-Louis never threatened to kill her and she isn't afraid of him.The two have been dating for more than three years, she said.
"I do not fear for my lifre or anything like that,'' Lazenberry said.
If Pierre-Louis can pay the $4,000 required for his release, he cannot have contact with Lazenberry until the case is resolved.
A warrant was issued for Pierre-Louis on Sunday after police alleged he kicked in Lazenberry's door, found someone else in the apartment and attempted to strangle her, held her against her will and wouldn't allow her to call for help.
He is facing five charges: domestic battery by strangulation, burglary of an occupied dwelling unarmed, domestic battery, kidnapping and false imprisonment and obstruction of justice/tampering with a witness.
Lazenberry appeared with attorney Amy Osteryoung, who was there representing Pierre-Louis. She was asked several questions by Osteryoung.
"Did he kick your door in?,'' Osteryoung asked. "No, he has a key to my place,'' Lazenberry responded.
Lazenberry said she never attempted to call 911, that Pierre-Louis never threatened to kill her and that he did not hold her against her will.
"He couldn't hurt a frog,'' she said, adding that she has attempted to contact the Gainesville Police Department concerning what she said are inaccuracies in its police report but said "I'm still waiting on a (return) phone call.''
But Judge Green said despite her testimony, he could not just release Pierre-Louis, but did order the bond reduction.
"I am finding probable cause for these charges,'' Green said. "She (the alleged victim) says she has no safety concerns, but I am concerned.''
Pierre-Louis played four seasons with the Gators, including every game this past season, most notably on special teams. A native of Haiti who is in the United States on a student visa, Pierre-Louis learned over the weekend that his mother is safe, but his home has sustained considerable damage in the recent earthquake.
