UPDATE: The Florida State Seminoles defeated the Florida Gators 8-5 Monday afternoon in the College World Series. The Gators go home, and the Seminoles go on to play the winner of tonight's UCLA-TCU game.

It was Florida State's first win over the Gators in the College World Series after losing in three previous meetings. Florida lost four of five games to the Seminoles this season.

Florida State has ended UF's season twice in the past three years.

Monday's loss was just the third time this season that the Gators lost consecutive games.

UF freshman pitcher Hudson Randall had his six-game winning streak, which spanned is last 10 starts, ended. Prior to Monday, his last defeat was on April 4 against Vanderbilt.

Trailing by six runs entering the ninth, the Gators rallied for three runs on four hits and had the bases loaded with one out. But FSU junior pitcher Mike McGee had freshman Mike Zunino line into a game-ending double play. Sophomore Jerico Weitzel and freshman Nolan Fontana (2-for-4, two runs) had back-to-back one-out singles off junior Daniel Bennett and a fielding error by senior shortstop Stephen Cardullo on a grounder hit by sophomore pinch hitter Ben McMahan filled the bases.

Tampa sophomore Preston Tucker (1-for-5) hit a three-run double down the right-field line that narrowed the gap to 8-5 and McGee was summoned from left field to the mound. Freshman Austin Maddox (2-for-5) hit a single that pushed Tucker to third and senior Matt den Dekker was hit by a pitch for the second time in the game to load the bases. Zunino's hit was caught by Cardullo who flipped over to freshman Devon Travis at second base to end the game and the Gators' season.

McGee earned his 13th save for the Seminoles.

The Florida and Florida State baseball teams just can't seem to get away from each other this season.

The Gators and Seminoles will meet for the fifth time this year in today's first elimination game of the College World Series in Omaha. FSU (47-19) suffered an 8-1 loss to TCU this past Saturday, while the Gators fell 11-3 to UCLA - sending both to the loser's bracket.

Today's game will be televised live on ESPN2 at 4:30 p.m., and can also be seen on ESPN3.com.

The last time Florida and Florida State met in the postseason, the Seminoles ended the Gators' season in the 2008 Tallahassee Regional. But Florida holds a 10-3 advantage in NCAA Tournament games against FSU and has won seven of the last eight contests.

In the four previous games this season, Florida State won three: 10-5 in Tampa on March 2; 7-2 in Jacksonville on March 30 and 3-2 in Tallahassee on April 13. Florida earned an 8-5 victory in Gainesville on March 16.

Florida coach Kevin O'Sullivan will put the Gators' fate in the hands of freshman pitcher Hudson Randall today. Randall will be making his team-leading 17th start and has not lost a game in his last 10 outings - dating back to a 7-0 loss to Vanderbilt on April 4. He is second on the team with 68 strikeouts in 94.2 innings and has limited opponents to a .266 batting average.

This will be his fourth appearance of the year versus the Seminoles and he is 0-1 with a 7.71 ERA after allowing 13 hits and nine runs (eight earned) in 9.1 innings. Randall did not receive a decision in his lone start against Florida State on March 16, in which he gave up six hits and fi ve runs over four innings at McKethan Stadium.

Florida has only lost consecutive games twice this season: March 26th and 27th at Ole Miss and May 22nd and 26th (11-6 at South Carolina in the regular-season finale and 10-6 to LSU in the first round of the SEC Tournament).

“We’re going to come out ready to play and put this behind us,” senior Matt den Dekker said following the UCLA loss. “We played them already four times this year, so we have an idea of what to expect. We’re going to come ready to play, come out with some intensity and get ready to go.”
