Athlon Sports Lists Gators' linebacker unit as best in the nation
When Florida linebacker Brandon Spikes decided to return for his senior season instead of leaving early for the NFL, he said one of his goals was to help make the Gator defense the best in the nation.
Spikes said it wasn't long after Florida won the BCS national championship last January that talk among the players and defensive coaches turned to ways they could improve this season.
At least one national publication believes the Gators are off to a good start - at least at the linebacker position. Athlon Sports has published its rankings of the best units, and lists the Gator linebackers as No. 1.
Meanwhile, here's what Spikes and the Gators are hoping to improve upon in the national rankings from last season:
Scoring defense: Florida ranked No. 4 in the nation, allowing just 12.93 points per game.
Total defense: No. 9, allowing 285 yards per game.
Pass defense, Florida ranked No. 20 nationally (179.85).
Rushing defense: The Gators were No. 15 (105.4).
"We did a lot of good things last season, but there's a lot we can get better at,'' Spikes said. "That's my job to make sure of that.''
