Billy Donovan happy to escape Auburn with a victory
So you thought it was brutal watching the Florida-Auburn men's basketball game Thursday night? Try being Billy Donovan.
The 45 points scored in the 45-40 victory was the fewest ever by a Billy Donovan coached team at Florida, and something quite unusual for the coach.
"I'm happy it's over,'' Donovan said Friday. No, I've never been a part of a game like that. I don't think I've ever been a part of a game as a coach where, one, you go on the road and you score 45 points and win and, two, you go on the road and you shoot the percentages that we did - 27 or 28 percent from the field and 19 percent from the 3-point line.''
The Gators closed the Auburn game on an 8-0 run in the final 1:51 after trailing by three. And despite the poor offensive showing, Donovan said he thinks it was a wake up call for the team.
"I think hopefully it drives home a message to our guys that one of the things that we probably in our first three SEC games had not been pleased with is I felt like we were a better defensive team than we showed,'' Donovan said. "And this was a game in which our offense was not there, we didn't shoot the ball very well and it was a difficult grind for us offensively. But our guys kept managing to play relatively good defense.''
