Billy Donovan prepares to face his son's team
Billy Donovan grew up in Gainesville watching his father's Florida basketball teams while sitting in the stands at the Stephen C. O'Connell Center.
On Thursday night, the younger Donovan will return to the O'Dome, but he won't be in the stands.
Donovan is a sophomore at Catholic University, and his team will face his father's team in an exhibition game.
Billy Donovan got his son's permission before scheduling the game, but his wife remains a little unhappy about the reunion. Asked if Christine Donovan is okay with the game, Donovan replied "Not great with it, no.''
He added: "I think it's hard for her. Actually she said to me 'Why don't you check with him first?' It's hard for her because it's her son and she wants it to be a good experience and for everything to go well. I don't know if she's wearing Catholic stuff, but I think she's happy it's an exhibition game, it really doesn't count for anybody. But I think like anybody else, she's probably happy her son's home and she just wants it to be a good experience for him and their team.
Donovan joked that he'll go box and one in the game, and said he's been getting calls from his friends.
"My buddies tell me I betcha he's going to get 25 against you guys,'' Donovan said.
