Billy Donovan says long layoff a concern for Gators
Florida hasn't played a game since its double-digit victory over Florida State on Dec. 5., and with final exams the Gators' practice schedule hasn't been what coach Billy Donovan would have hoped for.
The No. 5 Gators have practiced just once since the FSU game, which has Donovan slightly concerned about the layoff time as Florida begins preparations for Saturday night's nationally-televised showdown at No. 8 Arizona.
"I think we’ve lost some stuff here right now, a little bit, just because we haven’t practiced,'' Donovan said. "I don’t think it’s our guys’ fault, it’s been very, very hard, and I think every school is going through it. I’m sure anybody that’s dealing with a week of final exams, there’s a lot on these guys’ plate. We were in Tallahassee on Wednesday, and then Thursday starts reading period for our guys where there’s no more classes, and then exams start on Sunday and there’s a lot of work they need to get done. So when you get limited practice time, there’s a limited amount of time they have to do. Because of their academics there are always going to be things pulling at those guys, so what we’ve tried to do here at least early in the week is make sure our guys have enough time to prepare and do well academically and finish the semester strong, knowing that we have some time now on the back end to really, really practice. But I would say that I wish we could have maybe capitalized a little bit more on this time we had off, but I’m not so sure if there was any other way that we could do it, other than cutting into their academic time and I just didn’t feel like that was right for those guys. They have enough they have to do that’s more important right now than practice.''
The Gators will practice today, Wednesday and Thursday before heading out to Arizona on Friday.
