Brantley, McElroy share mutual respect

The last time Florida quarterback John Brantley and Alabama quarterback Greg McElroy met, it was a midfield on a December night following the 2009 SEC Championship game.

Brantley, then the Gators' backup quarterback, sought out McElroy after the Gators' loss to the Tide.

"I congratulated him and we wished each other luck,'' Brantley said this week. "We both sat for a couple of years (as backups) and we remember what that entails. I just have mutual respect for other quarterbacks and I wished him the best of luck.''

The two will be on opposing sides again Saturday night, this time with Brantley also in a starting role. The mutual respect will remain, but their friendship will have to be put aside for a few hours, McElroy said.

"I know John pretty well,'' he said. "We exchanged text messages a little bit after the SEC championship game. He's a good guy, he really is. He's a solid guy. He's a guy that roots for other people, and he's a guy that I support as long as he's not playing Alabama.''
