Does money talk in recruiting? And how much spending is too much for college athletics?
As athletic departments across the nation continue to struggle with the problems associated with a weak economy, many athletic directors are calling for their colleagues to take a serious look at the excessive amounts of money being spent on college athletics.
In a meeting last week of athletic directors from schools like Alabama, Boston College, California, Duke, Ohio State, Oklahoma and Stanford, a dire warning was issued that if schools aren't careful about the money being spent, they may live to regret it later.
Meanwhile, spending in the SEC is rolling along, particularly in recruiting. And schools like Ole Miss are having trouble keeping up with the big boys like Florida, Tennessee, LSU and Alabama.
