Donovan and Pitino to Reunite
GAINESVILLE - Twenty years after then-Providence coach Rick Pitino and his star point guard Billy Donovan led the Friars to a Final Four appearance, the two will reunite along with other key members of the team Saturday night for the 20-year reunion of the storied event at the Rhode Island Convention Center.
The 1987 team was one of only two Providence teams to reach the Final Four.
“This was a team that wasn’t blessed with great talent,” Pitino told The Associated Press. “It was blessed with a lot of players who really understood their roles and played their roles perfectly.”
Since that Final Four appearance, Pitino has made four other Final Four appearances — three with Kentucky (he won the 1996 NCAA championship) and one at Louisville. Donovan just led the Gators to back-to-back national championships.
Saturday night, they will gather to celebrate the memories of a "magical' time long ago.
“I think that’s unique, that 20 years has passed by,'' Donovan told AP.
