Florida coach Urban Meyer happy that focus has returned to the game
After a week of dealing with the nationwide hype and bitterness of Urban Meyer vs. Lane Kiffin, the Florida coach said Wednesday he's happy to be playing Kentucky this week where the focus hasn't been about the two coaches, but about the players and the game itself.
"I like that the focus has been on our players,'' Meyer said. "I've never quite experienced anything like that in the past. I'd rather stay away from that. I like it like this - where it's two good teams going against each other. And that's what college football is all about.''
Meyer and Kentucky coach Rich Brooks coached against each other in 1990 when Meyer was an assistant at Colorado State and Brooks was head coach at Oregon. Their friendship is a longstanding one, Meyer said.
"We're both NIKE coaches and we're part of that NIKE group and he's been a part of NIKE for a long time, so our families have become friends through that,'' Meyer said.
