Florida coach Will Muschamp names Jeff Driskel the starter for Texas A&M
Florida coach Will Muschamp on Monday said sophomore QB Jeff Driskel has won the starting job over sophomore Jacoby Brissett.
Muschamp called the decision "very difficult', but said he felt like Driskel gives the Gators the best chance to win righ now. Florida will play at Texas A&M on Saturday.
"We help ourselves by naming a starter and moving forward,'' said Muschamp, who added that Brissett was obviously not happy, but he expected that reaction.
Muschamp said the final decision was based on "the total process" from last spring, through the offseason and based on both players' performance in Saturday's game against Bowling Green.
"It was not a knee-jerk decision,'' Muschamp said.
He reiterated that he continues to believe that the Gators can win with both players, and that Brissett "is just one play away' from the starting job.
The Florida players said they support Muschamp's decision, but would have supported either QB.
"To me, the offense was settled whether there was both of them in the game or not,'' senior WR Frankie Hammond said. "It didn't matter to me. I don't think Driskel being the starter will break up the team or anything.''
