Florida forward Erik Murphy reinstated to basketball team
Florida coach Billy Donovan has reinstated junior forward Erik Murphy, following his arrest and subsequent plea agreement after he was charged with burglary last April.
“Erik Murphy has served his punishment,'' Donovan said in a statement released today. "We’re all disappointed with what transpired, but there’s no question Erik has learned a great deal through the whole process and understands what a great opportunity and privilege it is to play college basketball.”
Murphy and Florida F Cody Larson were suspended on April 12 after each was arrested for felony burglary charges. Police alleged that the two tried to break into a car in St. Augustine. The charges were eventually reduced to misdemeanor criminal trespass and Murphy agreed to a plea deal in July.
He paid $440 in restitution, performed 50 hours of community service and was ordered to complete a substance abuse evaluation program. In addition, Murphy was ordered not to consume alcohol or any other controlled substances until July 2012.
Larson remains suspended from the team. He has pleaded not guilty to misdemeanor trespass charges, but his case remains pending.
