Florida to honor 1992 volleyball team tonight
During tonight's match against Missouri, the No. 13 Florida volleyball team will honor its 1992 Final Four team, joined by several members of that team who will be in town for tonight's ceremony.
The Gators defeted Texas in the NCAA South Regional Championship to advance to its first Final Four in school history. The match is rememebered for its drama: UF All-American outside hitter Gudi Staub injured her ankle as the Gators trailed in the first game, seeming to doom any chance the Gators had of making history. She later returned, albeit still injured, and helped lead the Gators' rally to win three consecutive games.
It was on the second season for Florida head coach Mary wise, who is now in her 22nd season.
"Obviously it's something very special to be able to celebrate past champions,'' Florida assistant volleyball coach David Boos said this week. "It's great for Mary to see people come back to campus and be a part of this program again, but also for our young players to understand the tradition. We talk about it and you see all the banners around, but to see some of these players that have come back, that's something that Mary does a really good job with. She makes sure that the younger players and the new players get to meet these alumni and get a chance to feel what it meant to them, and what it means to them to be a part of the Gator Nation. It's a powerful thing. And it can only do good things for us to let them know that that group did to really be that successful."
The 1992 Final Four team will be honored at tonight's volleyball match between sets 2 and 3, and during Saturday afternoon's football game against Kentucky at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium.
