Florida lacrosse opens home season in search of first victory

The Florida lacrosse team will try to get its first win when it hosts Jacksonville University todday in its home-opener. This is the third matchup between the two teams, with UF holding a 2-0 lead in the series.

Florida opened the 2012 season against North Carolina this past wekeend, suffering an 11-9 loss.

Florida coach Amanda O'Leary said home-field has become a huge advantage for the Gators, who are just in their third season.

So why have the fans embraced the Gators so well?

"I think because it's a fast-paced sports, it's a fun sport to watch, there's a lot of goals, and they give out T-shirts, which is always a fan favorite,'' O'Leary said. "It's a sport unlike a lot of other sports here at Florida for the women to participate in, and for women to watch because it is so fast-paced. I think's interesting because the fans here, when we first started they didn't know the rules and they'vve now started to know the rules. They have a vested interest. . . I think it's a sport that's an easy sport to watch, it's exciting and a lot of goals are scored. Overall I couldn't be more thrilled with how the fans have embraced our program.''
