Florida men's basketball to play another Top 5 opponent tonight
The men's basketball team will play its second Top 5 opponent this season tonight at 7, when the Gators play Syracuse at the Carrier Dome.
With a victory tonight, Florida would get its first road win over a Top 5 opponent since defeating Kentucky in 1988.
Florida coach Billy Donovan, a Providence alum, is hoping the Gators will get a win - and some enjoyment - out of playing in such a unique atmosphere.
"It’s a great venue for college basketball, it’s a great environment,'' Donovan said. "We did have some success there in the NCAA Tournament in 2000, which was great. But they’ve got a great home court advantage, a great environment. It’s a unique situation. I don’t even know if there’s any other college program necessarily that plays in a Dome setting like that. It’s a special environment, our guys will enjoy it. It’s a different kind of place to play, I was fortunate 25 years ago to play in there several times.''
Junior guard Mike Rosario has also played at Syracuse during his first two years with Rutgers. He said the Gators need to be prepared for an unusually hostile environment.
"It’s a crazy atmosphere,'' Rosario said. "It’s loud and it’s a lot of orange. A lot of orange. It’s a dome and those guys love to go out there and have fun out there. Their fans are loyal so it’s going to be a good atmosphere to play in. I think this will be a great challenge for us again, another step forward.''
