Florida RB Mike Gillislee, kicker Caleb Sturgis earn SEC weekly honors

Florida senior RB Mike Gillislee and kicker Caleb Sturgis have been named SEC Co-Offensive Player of the Week and Co-Special Teams Player of the Week respectively for their performances in Florida's 37-26 win over Florida State.

Gillislee rushed for 140 yards in Saturday's game, and became the first Gator to rush for over 1,000 yards since Ciatrick Fason in 2004. He is only the eighth Florida player to rush for 1,000 yards or more in Florida history. Gillislee scored twice in the win, with a 9-yard run in the second quarter and on a 37-yard run in the fourth quarter. FSU never led after Gillislee scored.

Gillislee leads Florida with 11 touchdowns this season, 10 rushing, one receiving, and is second in scoring with 66 points. He is fourth in the SEC in rushing yards (87.6 ypg.), 13th in scoring touchdowns (4.9 ppg.) and ninth in all-purpose yards (99.9 ypg.).  Gillislee was also named the SEC Offensive Player of the Week after the Gators’ win over LSU.

Sturgis had a career day against the Seminoles. His three field goals in the game gave him sole possession of the UF record for career field goals made, passing former Gator Jeff Chandler’s record set from 1997-2001 with a 45-yard field goal in the second quarter to push his all-time field goals made total to 68 in his career. He kicked one more in the fourth quarter to put his current career total to 69.

On the day, Sturgis was perfect from both field-goal range and PAT's. The Lou Groza Award finalist has made three field goals in five games this season (Tennessee, Vanderbilt, Georgia, Jacksonville State, Florida State) and has multiple field goals in eight games this season. He is 23-for-27 for field goals this season, and ties Bobby Raymond’s single-season UF record with his 32-yard field goal in the fourth quarter Saturday that narrowed the Gators’ deficit to 20-16. He leads the Gators in scoring this season with 101 points.

Sturgis leads nearly all kicking statistics in the SEC this season, including field goals (1.82 fgpg.) and field goal percentage (83.3) while ranking third in kick scoring (8.0 ppg.) and ninth in point-after attempt percentage (96.6).  This is also Sturgis’ second SEC Special Teams Player of the Week honor this season; he earned it in week two after the Gators’ win over Texas A&M.
