Florida scrimmage leaves Will Muschamp with more questions than answers

Will Muschamp's disappointment over the Gators' final preseason scrimmage leaves the question did the Gators just have a bad day or is this a sign of things to come?

Muschamp said the team lacked mental focus and didn't execute well. Was it a case of fatigue after two weeks of two-a-days, then the start of fall semester this week? Only Muschamp and his staff know that because they're the only ones who have seen practices.

Even as late as Wednesday afternoon, before the scrimmage, Gator players were telling reporters how well the team was progressing and how this newfound team chemistry was making all the difference in the world. But Wednesday night, Muschamp described it differently.

"We did not execute very well,'' he said. "Mental toughness was not there. Very immature football team at this point. Not consistently performing at the level we need to perform at. Just disappointed overall with the mental effort tonight. Some procedural issues we should not be having at this point. Defense some mental mistakes we should not be having at this point. Overall pretty displeased.''

To be clear, Muschamp said it's not as if the whole team looked awful.

"We had no sense of urgency of what we're doing and how we do it and how we approach it,'' he said. "And it's not everybody. We've got a bunch of guys that do it the right sway but not enough and not collectively enough guys doing it that way at this point.''

Muschamp wouldn't be the first coach to come straight from a bad practice and rip his team publicly, both out of frustration and in an effort to keep them humble. If that's the case, no need for Florida fans to work themselves into a frenzy.

But if they are really as bad as Muschamp made it seem, 10 days before the season-opener, well that may be cause for concern afterall.

"It dang sure wasn't a step forward,'' Muschamp said when asked if the scrimmage performance was a step backward. "We've just got to get on the film. We're going to go out and have a good practice Thursday and Friday and get back Sunday night and get after it again. It's all we can do, go back and coach better and play better.''
