Florida tennis teams continue SEC tournament play today
The Florida men's and women's tennis teams will each play in the SEC tournament quarterfinals today.
The men's tournament is being held in Gainesville. No. 17 Florida, which defeated Arkansas 4-0 in the opening round, will play No. 19 Mississippi State today at 3 p.m. at Linder Stadium at Ring Tennis Complex.
The No. 1 women's team, which secured a bye for the opening round as the No. 1 seed, will play South Carolina today. The Gamecocks (15-7) needed nearly five hours to earn a 4-3 decision against Ole Miss in the opening round on Thursday afternoon.
Today will be the second time in six days the Gators (22-1) and Gamecocks will meet. Florida is 35-2 all-time against South Carolina,
including the 7-0 sweep on April 16 in the regular-season finale. The teams played twice last year, including the Gators' 4-0 win in the semifinals of the SEC Tournament. The Gators last loss to the Gamecocks was a 5-4 decision on May 16, 1982 in the NCAA round of
“We did play them last week but we have completely differently lineups for Friday,'' said UF coach Roland Thornqvist, who has led Florida to six SEC tournament titles in nine seasons. "That will be good for both teams. “It will get our attention and certainly South Carolina has all the incentives to play hard.''
The Gator women have won 12 consecutive matches heading into today.
The Florida men (15-8) will be making their 10th consecutive appearance in the quarterfinal round under head coach Andy Jackson - streak that began in Jackson's first season in 2002.
“The level goes up drastically (today), so we’ll see how we all respond,” Jackson said. “Mississippi State is among the best teams. They’re the only team in the league that beat Tennessee, and we barely beat them at State.”
