Florida thrower Kemal Mesic named SEC Male Athlete of the Week



mesic-thumb.jpgGators senior thrower Kemal Mesic has been named the SEC Men’s Field Athlete of the Week for his performance in the Alabama Invitational this past weekend, the league announced today.

It is the second career SEC weekly honor for Mesic  (April 7, 2009). He won the shot put title at the Alabama Invitational with a throw of 19.95m/65-5.50.

Mesic broke his previous Florida record of 19.53m/64-1 with the longest throw of the day in Birmingham, beating his opponents by nearly three meters.

The Sarajevo, Bosnia native is the only athlete in the nation so far this season to throw better than 65 feet in the shot put and is one of only four athletes in the nation so far this season to record an NCAA automatic-qualifying mark in the men’s shot put.

The Gators host the 2012 Gator Invite on Sunday, Jan. 22, at the Stephen C. O'Connell Center.  Field events begin at 11 a.m., running events will start at 1 p.m.
