Florida women fall to Tennessee 83-40

When she finally got her team back inside the locker room for a postgame chat, Florida women's basketball coach Amanda Butler didn't try to sugarcoat the Gators' 83-40 loss to No. 5 Tennessee.

Yes, they had just faced the best team, by far, in the SEC. And yes, Tennessee played a tremendous game. But for Butler, it was what the Gators' didn't do that was the biggest postgame topic of conversation.

"We don’t hide from the truth,'' Butler said. "We didn’t play well and I feel like that was on us. Granted you give a lot of that credit to Tennesee for their effort. But we addressed the fact that when we’re good and we’re our best, we’re playing tough and we’re playing aggressive and we’re setting the tone. Yeah, it is only one loss and if we had beaten them it would have been only one win. But Florida playing Florida basketball is what we talked about in the locker room. And that’s where the change has to be. The name on the jersey, sometimes draws more people into the postgame press conference or pregame hype or that sort of thing. But our effort and the way that we play shouldn’t be altered at all by who we’re playing. And that certainly was the difference tonight. We didn’t play the way that led to a win against South Carolina, the way that led to a win against a very good Arkansas team. We weren’t the same team tonight.’’

The Gators (12-6, 2-2) shot 28 percent from the field in the first five minutes and trailed 47-15 at halftime- only the fifth time this season Florida had trailed at the half. The Gators’ largest deficit at the half this season had been five points.
Tennessee outrebounded the Gators 57-37 (UF had just four offensive rebounds in the first half), and shot 47.8 percent from the field. Florida shot 21.4 percent (15-of-70) from the field – the third worst field goal percentage in school history.
