Florida's Kevin O'Sullivan to Gator players: "Enjoy the draft"
When the MLB Draft begins tonight and continues on Tuesday, several Florida players are expected to be selected, including junior catcher Mike Zunino who is projected to be among the top five picks.
With the Gators having already secured a berth in this weekends's NCAA Super Regional, Florida coach Keivn O'Sullivan said he wants his players to take today and enjoy the rewards of their hard work.
"(Monday) is a big day, Tuesday is a big day,'' O'Sullivan said. "I want these guys to enjoy the draft. It is part of our game. For me, I'm looking forward to watching our guys come off the board and putting that behind them. They worked awfully hard for (Monday) and Tuesday. I want them to enjoy it. We'll refocus after the draft is done for our opponent this weekend.''
Zunino said he plans to spend the day with his family while he awaits the outcome of the draft.
"I'm just going to try to enjoy it as much as I can,'' he said.
O'Sullivan said the way Zunino has handled the pressure that comes with being a high draft pick while keeping focused on his team and his responsibilities to the Gators has been impressive.
"He's very, very mature,'' OSullivan said. "You don't have to worry about the off the field part of it for him. He has all the intangibles and obviously he's had the career here at Florida we were all hoping for. But you can't have the success he's had without being complete both on and off the field. He's matured. He gets it. He comes from a great family. He he respects his teammaets, his teammates respect him. He's got leadership skills that you can't teach. He's done a terrific job.''
