Gator cross country runner named SEC women's freshman runner of the week
Florida freshman country runner Julie Macedo has been named the SEC Women’s Freshman Runner of the Week - her second time being honored by the league office this season.
Competing in the first 5K race of her collegiate career, Macedo finished third overally in the Mountain Dew Invitational this past Saturday with a 17:32.01. Macedo was the first freshman in the field of 157 women’s athletes to cross the finish line, while her 5K mark is the third-fastest for a freshman in the SEC this season.
Florida won the team titles at the meet on both the men's and women's sides.
The Gators won the top five spots on the women’s side for a perfect team score of 15 points - turning in a pack spread of just over 20 seconds between the first and fifth scorers, nearly a nine-second improvement from Florida’s season-opening race in Cullowhee, N.C.
Florida junior Agata Strausa won the women’s event in 17:13.32, marking her first collegiate cross country race and victory, while seniors Florence Ngetich, Callie Cooper and junior Steph Strasser scored second, fourth and fifth, respectively.
