Gator gymnasts begin quest for national championship on Thursday

The Florida gymnastics team will try to earn the school's first ever NCAA gymnastics title this week in a place where it feels most comfortable.

At home.

Florida will host the 2010 NCAA Gymnastics Championships, beginning Thursday afternoon, in the Stephen C. O'Connell Center.

"I definitely think it’s an advantage to compete at home,'' UF head coach Rhonda Faehn said. "It’s a situation where our athletes are comfortable and familiar with. . . I think that they are excited to get out there and we need all of our Gator fans to come out there and cheer us on.''

The first session, which begins at 1 p.m. will involve competition between UCLA, LSU, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Oregon State and Utah.

The second semifinal will begin at 7 p.m., with Florida, Alabama, Arkansas, Michigan, Missouri and Stanford.

The top six teams advance to the Super Six on Friday night, where a national champion will be crowned.

The Gators are trying to win the school's third national championship in the past two months. The men's track and field team won a national indoor title last month, and the women's swimming and diving team also won a national championship.
