Gator opponents to get tougher?

When only three SEC teams were selected for this year's NCAA men's basketball Tournament, SEC Commissioner Mike Slive said it should send a message to league teams: beef up those non-conference schedules.

Florida may be taking that to heart.

According to a report on its university website, Xavier will play the Gators next season, part of a home-and home series. Xavier, which did advance to the NCAA Tournamen this season, will play the Gators in the O'Connell Center next year, then Florida will play in Cincinnati during the 2010-11 season.

Also, reports out of West Virginia are that the Moutaineers are trying to reach an agreement, and could possibly be on a future upcoming schedule against the Gators.

Discussions are also underway for a Florida-Notre Dame matchup for next year's SEC/Big East Challenge at the St. Pete Times Forum.

UF has a longstanding policy not to discuss its schedules until they are completed.
