Gator softball team expecting "big test" this week
In a week that includes final exams, a midweek doubleheader, then traveling to face one of the toughest opponents in the league, the No. 3 Florida softball team is anticipating one of its most challenging stretches of the season.
"This is probably going to be the toughest week we've had to face all season long,'' UF head coach Tim Walton said. "We're getting ready for finals, we're playing on Tuesday against a team that swings the bat very, very very well. We'll have a tough doubleheader, then travel on Thursday to Tennessee. They are one of the top five teams in the country swinging the bat offensively and they are a very fast team. So it'll be a big test and we're going to find out exactly where we're at. It'll be a big test where we'll find out what we need to do.''
Florida will host FIU today, beginning at 4 p.m. The Gators will play the Vols in a doubleheader on Friday, then finish the series Saturday afternoon.
With just three weeks remaining in the regular season, Walton said he likes where the Gators stand right now.
"When I look on paper at where we're at, we're 34-5 and on paper you say wow we've really done a good job to be where we're at in the win-loss column compared to where we're at in some of the statistical categories,'' Walton said. "That's a tribute to some really good offense, some timely defense and some timely pitching. But by no stretch of the imagination are we really great in any one of those categories. I think more than anything, it's more the sense of we're a team as opposed to a lot of great individuals.''
