Gators' Allie Will jumps to No. 1 in national tennis rankings
Florida All-American Allie Will is the No. 1 ranked singles tennis player in the nation in the latest Intercollegiate National Tennis Rankings, released Thursday by the ITA.
Will becomes the ninth different Gator since the 1988 season to earn the No. 1 singles ranking. She joins: Halle Cioffe, Nicole Arendt, Lisa Raymond, Jill Craybas, Jessica Lehnhoff, Alexis Gordon, Jennifer Magley and Diana Srebrovic.
After dropping a 5-2 decision to then-No. 2 Stanford this past Sunday, the Florida women's team dropped to No. 2 in the ITA poll, while Stanford took over the top spot.
Will, a junior, has begun the 2011-12 season with an 11-0 singles record, including her title run during the 2011 fall at the ITA/Riviera All-American Singles Championships - considered one of the collegiate grand slam events. Will has a 94-10 career singles record, in addition to a 74-15 doubles mark. She is 56-3 in career dual match singles competition, including 20-0 in SEC dual matches.
Also appearing in the Feb. 16 national rankings are Gator senior Joanna Mather (16) sophomore Sofie Oyen (30), junior Lauren Embree (33) and sophomore Alexandra Cercone (62).
