Gators coach Billy Donovan close to signing contract extension

12

October

Florida is close to finalizing a contract extension for basketball coach Billy Donovan that would extend through the 2015-16 season.

“I think we’re pretty close,’’  Donovan said Wednesday. “Jeremy (Foley, athletic director) and I have already agreed on that. Jeremy has really always been proactive with me, Dr. (Bernie) Machen has been great. In terms of us on the same page, we totally are, it’s just a matter of me signing it and getting it done.’’

Donovan who is about to begin his 16th  season as the Gators’ head coach, currently earns about $3.5 million annually.  He has won two national championships, and last season won an SEC regular season championship and took the Gators to the Elite Eight. Donovan said continuity in Florida’s athletic administration is a major reason he’s remained at Florida.

“I think in this day and age in coaching it’s very, very rare that you stay at a job starting my 16th year and you still have the same athletic director in place. “I think it’s  been our relationship that’s made this job and this opportunity for me here so special. I would think that it would happen soon.'

Foley said retaining Donovan is what's best for Florida.

“Obviously everyone knows how we feel about Billy Donovan,’’ Foley  said. “It’s in the best interest of our program to keep him here for a long time.’’
