Gators Gerald Christian, Robert Clark to transfer from program
Florida TE Gerald Christian and WR Robert Clark have asked for, and received permission to transfer.
Florida coach Will Muschamp announced on Tuesday that the two - both from Palm Beach Gardens - intend to transfer from the program.
“Both of these players have expressed a desire for more playing time and felt that it would be in their best interests to transfer,” Muschamp said in a statement released Tuesday afternoon. "We wish them both the best of luck and appreciate their contributions to the program.”
Christian, a 6-foot-3, 245-pound tight end, had four catches for 72 yards and one touchdown this season.
“I’m looking for an opportunity to play more,” Christian said. “I have no bad feelings about Florida or the coaching staff, I just want to get a fresh start and see the field more.”
Clark, who is 5-foot-9, 173 pounds, did not have a reception this season. He had seven receptions for 69 yards and one TD in 2010.
“I’ve enjoyed being a part of the Gator program but at the same time I’m excited about future opportunities to play more,” Clark said. “I will have nothing but good memories from my time in Gainesville.”
Florida offensive coordinator Charlie Weis said he was surprised by the decisions.
“Both of them surprised me,'' he said. "They practiced last week every day. You’d think if you were going to quit you’d quit last week. Why would you go through a bye week of practice? I know one thing if I’m packing it in, I’m not going to go through the bye week and then say ‘Okay, I practiced last week when we don’t have a game, now I’m going to go this week.’ That caught me off guard, let me just say.’’
