Gators have great expectations for John Brantley

In his role as the face of the Florida football program during Urban Meyer's current leave, UF offensive coordinator Steve Addazio often finds himself being asked about the Gators' new starting quarterback John Brantley.

Afterall, Brantley is replacing a Gator legend, Tim Tebow, so it's no surprise the subject keeps coming up. Is Brantley ready for the challenge of finally leading the Gators?

Addazio believes he is. And he isn't surprised by Brantley's success this past spring.

"Johnny had a great spring which is really no surprise at all,'' Addazio said. "He had a great fall as well. I think obviously stepping in and walking in that huddle, our team has a great deal of respect for him. He's a guy that's really paid his dues and had great work ethic here. He walks in, they have tremendous confidence in him.''

While Brantley is just taking over the starting role, it's not like he's a rookie in the Gator football program. He has been the Gators' reserve quarterback for the past two seasons, and nearly got his first start at LSU last season after Tebow went down with a concussion and was thought to be questionable for the LSU game.

"Let's not forget last year there was tremendous confidence in Johnny Brantley as well,'' Addazio said. "He's one of the top quarterbacks in our conference. he just continued that this spring and it was great to watch. Obviously his play this spring was excellent. We have great expectations for John. He's gonna have a great year ahead of him, he's a talented guy, he's really prepared and trained for this opportunity so we look for great things.''
