Gators' John Brantley out for Auburn game, but making progress with injury

Florida QB John Brantley will not play this week against Auburn, but Florida coach Will Muschamp said the senior making progress toward returning.

“He’s working hard,'' Muschamp said. "He’s been in the training room a lot. He went on the road with us. He got all the reps he could get as far as rehabbing his ankle. We feel like he’s making good progress, we just want to move forward with that.”

With Brantley out, freshmen Jacoby Brissett and Jeff Driskel are in the rotation to take over.

Muschamp said Brissett is the starter, but depending on how Driskel's sprained ankle continues to heal, he will practice this week and could play.

“I really think that’ll depend on Jeff’s health,’’ Muschamp said when asked if Driskel and Brissett will evenly split practice time. “Obviously we would generally go into a situation where they would split reps. So they would be pretty equal reps as far as that’s concerned because they are both similar players. It’s not like one guy’s a different quarterback than the other guy, they are both very similar skill sets as far as that’s concerned. But a lot of that’s going to depend on Jeff’s ankle. How many reps will he be able to rep in practice? I don’t know at this point... As we move further in the week I’ll know how much he’ll be able to go and compete for the job this week and that’ll determine the reps and then obviously determine the starter.’’
