Gators' Kadji continues struggle with back problems

Kennykadji It appears Florida won't be getting help with its depth problems anytime soon.

Sophomore forward Kenny Kadji continues to have problems with a disc injury in his back, and it doesn't appear he'll be playing anytime soon.

"He’s still got another injection to go andI don’t anticipate him playing anytime soon if he’s able to,'' Florida coach Billy Donovan said. "I think what he’ll have to do is get the injection, and then they’ll let the injection settle, and then they’ll probably want him to go back into practice and see how he responds. He had one injection and he went back to practicing, and after three days he had numbness down his leg, he had pain in his back and throughout his leg. And that’s when they decided they wanted to give him two more injections. I guess three injections is the normal procedure with what they do to see if the disc responds to that''

The 6-foot-10 Kadji had been expected to be a complement to 6-foot-10 center Vernon Macklin as a much-needed presence inside for the Gators. He played in 35 of Florida's 36 games last season, but played in just eight games (45 minutes) this season. He has not played, or had much practice time, since Dec. 19.

"They’ve calmed him down from doing anything and he's missed so much,'' Donovan said. "He’s been doing things as well as he can in terms of what he can do on the treadmill and the pool and he’s still lifting. But it’s a little bit different when you’re running up and down the floor as a big guy, your conditioning, your stamina and your timing. So even if he was cleared to play in the next couple of weeks, I still think he’s got a little bit of a road ahead of him to get where he can be effective.''
