Gators make big push in final recruiting weekend
With National Signing Day less than one week away, Florida has one last opportunity in this final weekend of official visits to bolster its 2011 class.
Whether the Gators have been hurt by the loss of recruiting coordinator Stan Drayton, who resigned this week to take a job as the Ohio State wide receivers coach, may be discovered this weekend. Among the players expected to visit are OLB Curt Maggitt of West Palm Beach Dwyer. Drayton was his primary recruiter.
Florida will also host DT Johnathan Jenkins (Gulf Coast Community College); DE Jermauria Rasco (Shreveport, La., Evangel Christian) and DE Tevin Westbrook (Coconut Creek North Broward).
Since UF coach Will Muschamp took over in December, the Gators have added just one to their class. What that really means depends on which recruiting service you ask. The Gators' overall class is currently ranked No. 19 by Rivals.com, No. 27 by Scout.com and No. 5 by ESPN.com.
"With this class, I don't see a huge negative effect with what took place on the field and the coaching change with the move from Urban Meyer to Will Muschamp,'' said Tom Luginbill, ESPN national recruiting director. "And time will tell with as many pro-style guys as Will Muschamp has brought in, guys that have been in professional football - not necessarily been on the recruiting trail. Will that pay dividends? Or will that be a detriment? We don't know that yet. But I think with this class remaining largely intact in a transition year coming off a bad year on the field, I think this class will be one you'll look back on and have some quality come out of it in very trying times.''
