Gators to open season at No. 1
It's probably no big surprise, but Florida has been voted No. 1 in the USA Today Coaches Poll, released this morning.
The defending national champion Gators received 53 of 59 first place votes.
Texas is No. 2, followed by Oklahoma,Southern Cal and Alabama.
Other SEC teams in the poll include LSU at No. 9, Mississippi at No. 10 and Georgia at No. 13.
Florida coach Urban Meyer wouldn't comment on the Gators' preseason ranking, saying the Gators are focused on making sure they are ready for the season-opener against Charleston Southern.
And while the players said it wasn't unexpected, it's not something they will focus on, either.
"They give you that when you finish No. 1 the year before, but just because it's given to us doesn't mean we're not going to work to try to earn it,'' DE Carlos Dunlap said. "Honestly, I haven't been thinking about it. I've been working to get better on things I messed up on last year and the way I need to develop more. I want to get better at everything.''
"We just really have to answer the call and there's no reason why we can't,'' OL James Wilson said. "We just have to finish what we start and try to back up all the talk. Every year after you win tha championship, you have to make things harder than they were last year. And we did some really hard stuff to get ready to handle everything this year.''
