Gators weekend sports wrapup



Here is a recap of Florida sports from the past weekend:


MEN'S BASKETBALL: Senior forward Erik Murphy had a team-high 19 points (on 5-of-6 shooting from 3-point range), and senior guard Kenny Boynton had a career-high 10 assissts to lead Florida to a 78-64 victory over Mississippi. The Gators remain undefeated in SEC play and are on a 10-game winning streak. Ole Miss guard Marshall Henderson led all scorers with 25 points. Four Gators scored in double figures.


WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Freshman Christin Mercer had her first career double-double, and five Gators scored in double-figures to lead Florida to an 87-54 win over Alabama n the O’Connell Center on Sunday afternoon. The Gators (14-9, 3-6 SEC) shot a season-best 58.3 percent (35-60) from the floor and held a 51-33 rebounding advantage against the Crimson Tide (12-10, 2-7 SEC), who managed to hit just 25.7 percent of their shots, including a 3-of-23 three-point effort.

“I think it was a great win for our program in a lot of different ways,” UF head coach Amanda Butler said. “We had a fantastic crowd, being able to honor our alumni in the fashion that we have all weekend long.  Celebrating and trying to raise awareness of breast cancer, research and raising money and being in pink and then obviously getting a very big win, not just winning the ball game, but winning in a convincing fashion.”

WOMEN'S TENNIS: Senior All-American Lauren Embree earned career win No. 100 in doubles as the No. 1-ranked women's tennis team defeated No. 15 Baylor 7-0 Saturday afternoon.

Embree became the 14th different Gator to reach the 100-win plateau for doubles, as she improved to 100-18 in her distinguished collegiate doubles career. Embree also earner her 99th career singles victory with her 6-4, 6-7 (6), 1-0 (10-7) win against 16th-ranked Ema Burgi

SWIMMING AND DIVING: The Gators' swimming and diving teams closed out their dual meet season with victories against SEC rival Tennessee on Friday's Senior Night. The 7th ranked women upset the No. 4 Vols by winning with a score of 167-133, while the 5th ranked Gator men won in dominant fashion with a score of 208-92.

UF's men improved to 7-0 overall and 5-0 in the SEC, while the women are 3-4 and 2-3 in the SEC. The win for the Gator men solidified their undefeated season, the second-straight year they have not dropped a dual meet.

WOMEN'S GOLF:  Senior Mia Piccio won the Lady Bulldog Invitational Saturday title with a score of 69, only two shots better than second place finisher, Laura Wearn of Furman. The round of 69 for Piccio is her best 18-hole performance for this season. Her lowest round prior to Saturday was two rounds of 70 back at the Cougar Classic in early September.
