Urban Meyer is the second-most popular college coach among NFL players, behind Southern Cal's Pete Carroll, according to an informal survey of players by the Sporting News.

In the most recent issue of the magazine, 43 NFL players were asked which college coach they'd most like to play for other than the coach they played for in college.

The results as follow:

— 12 votes: Pete Carroll (USC)
— 8 votes: Urban Meyer (Florida)
— 3 votes: Mike Leach (Texas Tech), Randy Shannon (Miami)
— 2 votes: Frank Beamer (Virginia Tech), Lane Kiffin (Tennessee), Joe Paterno (Penn State), Nick Saban (Alabama), Steve Spurrier (South Carolina)
— 1 vote: Bobby Bowden (Florida State),  Dennis Erickson (Arizona State),  Chip Kelly (Oregon), Ken Niumatalolo (Navy), Bob Stoops (Oklahoma), Jeff Tedford (California), Ron Zook (Illinois).

Here is what a couple had to say about Meyer:

Bengals QB Carson Palmer: “If I went there, they’d have to change a little bit because I’m not going to be able to do the things ( Tim) Tebow can do.”

Jets FS Kerry Rhodes: “He’s such a fiery guy and such a competitor. You like to play for those types of guys. He kind of reminds me of (Arkansas’ Bobby) Petrino, the way they both seem to demand a lot of you, but at the end of the day, they want what’s best for you and the team.”

Titans TE Alge Crumpler: “Tim Tebow has a strong affection for his coach, and you don’t see a lot of that. They seem to be very, very close, and I think that says a lot.”

The new issue of Sporting News Magazine, which honors Pittsburgh as America’s Best Sports City,is available at Barnes & Noble, Borders and Hudson Retail outlets.
