Gymnasts Advance to Super Six

The No. 1 Florida gymnastics team advanced to the NCAA Super Six team final Thursday in Salt Lake City after posting its highest score ever in NCAA Championships competition - 107.40. The Gators will compete for the national championship Friday night at 9 p.m.

Georgia and Nebraska also advanced from Session I of the competition. Three other teams from the 9 p.m. second session will round out the top six, which will compete for the national championship.

Georgia scored the highest score of the first session, 197.700, Florida was second and Nebraska scored a 196.625. Alabama, a perennial Super Six contender, finished fifth and did not advance.

"We didn't peak today,'' Florida coach Rhonda Faehn said. "We had a good competition, but not a great competition. That is exactly what we needed. You don't want you best competition of the entire year (Thursday). We want it (Friday). To win the national title, you have to get all your stuck landings and handstands on bars to eliminate the little deductions that really add up. We definitely have room to improve.''
