Has Nick Calathes played his last game as a Gator?
Florida's basketball season had barely come to an end Tuesday night when questions about sophomore guard Nick Calathes' future began.
The Casselberry native was Florida's leading scorer this season and a first-team All-SEC selection. Some NBA websites have Calathes as a late first-round pick. Which begs the question: with Florida's limited success the past two years, has Calathes played his final collegiated game?
"I'm not thinking about that right now,'' he said in the locker room after the Gators' NIT quarterfinals loss to Penn State. "When it's time I'll sit down with Coach (Billy Donovan) and I'll sit down with my family and go from there.''
Calathes joined the team after the Gators won back-to-back national championships, but has never played in the NCAA Tournament himself. He said he wasn't sure if having never been to the tournament would affect his decision.
"I don't know,'' he said. "I'm definitely a winner and I want to win.''
High school and current UF teammate Chandler Parsons said he'll try to talk Calathes into staying another year. And transfer Vernon Macklin said he thinks Calathes will return.
"I think he's coming back,'' said Macklin, a transfer from Georgetown who had to sit out the 2008-09 season per NCAA rules. "He loves
being here, he loves being with this team so I think he will be here with us next year. He never talks about the NBA or anything so I just think Nick loves playing here. So I think he'll be here with us next year.''
