Jermaine Cunningham, Carlos Dunlap selected in NFL draft second round

Former Florida defensive ends Jermaine Cunningham and Carlos Dunlap are the first two Gators selected in the second round of the NFL draft.

Cunningham was the No. 53 pick of the New England Patriots, while Dunlap went No. 54 to the Cincinnati Bengals.

"It was just overwhelming, everybody jumping on me and just being excited,'' Cunningham said about hearing his name called.

Cunningham was a second-team AP and SEC coaches All-SEC selection. He led the Gators in 2009 in tackles for loss (12.0) and second in sacks (7.0).

Cunningham and Dunlap are tied for 10th on the UF career sacks list with 19.5.

Although he's unsure what role he'll be asked to fill on the Patriots' defense, Cunningham said he's confident he'll be able to adapt.

"I’m a football player, so as long as I’m on the field I think everything’s fine,'' he said.
