LaPorta Finalist for Dick Howser Trophy
GAINESVILLE - Senior first baseman Matt LaPorta on Thursday was named among 16 finalists for the Dick Howser Trophy, honoring the top collegiate player in the nation.
LaPorta leads the Gators in eight different offensive categories. He is first in the SEC in batting average overall (.423) and league games (.456) and has 49 RBI and 19 homers. LaPorta's slugging percentage is .853 and he is also among the NCAA leaders with a .579 on-base percentage. He has scored 57 runs, drawn 41 walks, been hit 18 times and has 10 doubles. home runs, a total that rates third all-time in the SEC, LaPorta has six multiple-HR outings in 2007.
The National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA), working in conjunction with the St. Petersburg Area Chamber of Commerce, will choose the Dick Howser Trophy recipient based on three rounds of voting. The 2007 winner will be announced just prior to the first game of the NCAA College World Series, with a press conference slated for Friday, June 15, at 11 a.m. at the Omaha Press Club.
