Locke dismissed from Gator baseball team

Two days after he was arrested and charged with DUI, Florida senior baseball player Stephen Locke has been dismissed from the team.

A Florida athletic official said Monday that Locke is "no longer with the Florida baseball program.''

Locke was arrested around 2:15 a.m. Saturday after, according to police, he was seen driving a Mercuy SUV erratically on W. University Ave.

When a GPD officer stopped Locke ( who was wearing an armband from a local bar called the Grog House), alcohol could be smelled on his breath, according to police, and his speech was slurred. Locke refused to undergo a field sobriety test and was arrested and taken to the Alachua County Jail.

Locke had 12 starts for the Gators last season, second on the team. He was 5-2 with a 3.17 ERA in a career-high 21 appearances. He struck out 46 batters and allowed just 13 walks in 82.1 innings. He had the Gators' lowest ERA in SEC play (2.91).

He was expected to be an integral part of the Gator pitching staff this season. Florida opens the 2009 season on Feb. 20.
