Meyer Gets First Commitment for 2008

GAINESVILLE - Gainesville High defensive end Earl Okine became Urban Meyer's first oral commitment for the 2008 class on Thursday.

Gainesville coach Eddy Moore told that Okine (6-foot-7 and 240 pounds) received an offer from the Gator staff on Wednesday after he was invited to the campus for a visit.

Okine recorded 87 tackles and 10 sacks last season.

"Okine is a jumbo athlete that picked up a lot of momentum during the early portion of this recruiting cycle,'' recruiting expert J.C. Shurburtt told "He's what you want out of a potential defneisve line recruit. He's tall, versatile and athletic. Multiple college programs felt he was a major BCS conference prospect. It's a big pick-up for Florida as there is a need at defensive end, which is Okine's most likely position.''

He was considering offers from Florida State, Maryland, Ole Miss, Virginia Tech, South Carolina and Purdue.
