Meyer says he has nothing but respect for Spurrier

Florida coach Urban Meyer said today that he and South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier have become "good friends" over the past several years and he and his staff have nothing but the utmost respect for Spurrier and his legacy at Florida.

"He is Florida,'' Meyer said. "He was a Heisman Trophy winner here and there’s never been any attempt whatsoever to change that. All of this place, and we built it ( the new facility), are great reminders of what (he’s done). He’s a Hall of Fame coach and player and he’s a good guy. So there’s no issues whatsoever.''

Meyer said the two often talked during his time away for health reasons and Spurrier gave him sound advice on managing the job and life.

"He's the reason that I came here,'' Meyer said. "I have such admiratoin for the way his teams played, and that's no secret. Now he's on the opposite sideline and other than for that (game time), we get along great.''

Spurrier's legacy at Florida can never be erased, but the effect he has on some of Florida's current players varies.

Senior center Mike Pouncey expressed great admiration for Spurrier, while senior RB Emmanuel Moody said he's not really all that familiar with the former Florida player and coach.

"I don't know too much,'' Moody said this week. "I'm from Dallas. I didn't really know too much about Florida's history growing up. I heard he's a trickster, he has a lot of trick plays and we have to be aware of that Saturday.''

Pouncey said Spurrier commands respect because of what he did for Florida.

"Personally, I love coach Spurrier,'' Pouncey said. "He's one of the only head coaches I wait for, that I really like meeting after the games. I try and meet him after every game, just because of his history here at Florida. He's a great coach and he's a great guy."
