Muschamp will take his time hiring new staff
New Florida head coach Will Muschamp said he will not hire a staff until after the Gators have played their final game on Jan. 1 in the Outback Bowl, but he will spend the next several weeks evaluating the current staff trying to determine which, if any will fit with the style he’s bringing to Gainesville.
“I've got zero timetable in hiring a staff,’’ Muschamp said at his introductory press conference Tuesday night. “It's not about doing the easiest thing. It's not about doing the quickest thing. It's about making the best decision and that's what we need to do for the University of Florida right now. “We’ll evaluate those guys (current coaches) in the coming weeks before the bowl game but nothing's going to be done in my opinion before the bowl game as far as coaches that will be hired, retained, whatever. We're going to make the best decisions for Florida and right now I've got absolutely no timetable for that.’’
Florida strength and conditioning coach Mickey Marotti will be retained, Muschamp said. So far, he is the only member of the current staff who will definitely return.
“That’s definitely good for us, just to keep the continuity in the conditioning program,’’ receiver Frankie Hammond, Jr. said. “He knows how to train us and he knows what everybody’s strength and weaknesses are, and having him will help to keep us intact.’’
“I'm really excited that Mickey's going to stay on and be a Gator,’’ Muschamp said. “He's outstanding. He's as good a strength coach as there is in the country. My first visit was to our weight room to visit with him and make sure he understood than he and I are on the same page with what we want for our athletes.’’
As for the remainder of the staff, their status is up in the air.
"We have an outstanding staff here on campus,'' Muschamp said. "I've talked extensively with Urban about the coaches. I've got outstanding men, coaches and recruiters, and we'll evaluate those guys in the coming weeks before the bowl game. But nothing is going to be done in my opinion right now before the bowl game.''
Muschamp did not address whether he thinks waiting to hire a staff will negatively affect recruiting. Several recruits have already said they are taking a wait and see approach until a staff is put in place.
